Britain's biggest men's cycling race gets underway next week – but a new campaign is hoping the professionals can inspire a few more people to get on their bikes themselves.
The Lloyds Tour of Britain begins in Lincoln on September 2nd, with five days of racing taking the peloton through Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire before the finale in the Scottish Borders.
Running alongside the event is British Cycling's Sofa to Saddle campaign – a new initiative aimed at getting one million more people cycling by 2028.
The free app offers an eight-week programme designed to make getting on a bike less intimidating, with advice on everything from planning routes and bike maintenance to gradually improving fitness and confidence.
"The Sofa To Saddle app is full of loads of different information and tools that you may need to get into cycling. British Cycling are running so many initiatives to get people on bikes in the country. This 'Sofa To Saddle' partnership with Lloyds has been one of many and it is my favourite so far", said BMX rider Ross Cullen.
The campaign has received backing from some of Britain's biggest cycling names, including Paralympic champion Kadeena Cox and former world champion Lizzie Deignan.
"The 'Sofa To Saddle' campaign is about people getting off their sofas and onto bikes and, kind of, that progress of, you know, going from a novice cyclist or someone that has been on a bike in the past, to being able to get out and get on your bike and smashing those kilometres, those miles, and I think it is really important to be able to push our abilities, and to be able to get people to be doing physical activity, because it is so important for our mental well-being and our physical well-being", said Cox.
