One the most useful features of virtual reality is when you can tune out distractions from the physical environment to focus on accomplishing a specific task. Researchers Andreas Rene Fender and Christian Holz at ETH Zürich's SIPLAB recently explored how "Causality-preserving Asynchronous Reality" could let you catch up on what happened while you were away. Holz joined the UploadVR studio recently to walk us through the research.
00:00 Asynchronous Reality Summary
01:17 How did this research begin?
02:43 Horizon Zero Dawn's holographic recordings
03:33 Will we have depth sensors everywhere in the future?
07:39 Is this the VR equivalent of an answering machine?
12:21 Will future VR headsets watch us when they're not being worn?
15:56 Creating a 'causality graph' to make sense of what's happening in a space
17:36 How far off is this technology from consumers?
21:20 What are the ethical considerations for companies like Apple, Meta, or Microsoft?
