Time travel. If you could, where would you go, what would you do? I’d definitely go back and change stuff. I’d slip crushed birth control pills into George Lucas’s mother’s gin sling. Or book her in for a surprise teenage hysterectomy. And I’d go back to Victorian London circa 1888 to Whitechapel, play the theme from Eastenders on a gin-house barrel piano and find out the identity of Jack The Ripper. And when I did, I’d confront him with: “just who the bloody hell are you then?” because chances are he was some sick anonymous nobody no one has ever heard of. Some twisted no mark Joe Soap with a complex about something. A prototype snowflake, the granddaddy of cancel culture, cancelling people he didn’t like in the most extreme way. Time travel, eh? A fantasy? Well, maybe that’s for the best. I can dream, though.
On a more serious note, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to David Warner, who died recently. A terrific actor who was in some terrific films, not least of which was Time After Time. To my knowledge and in my experience, he never gave a bad performance. He will be missed. RIP.
