The Timber Fire, in Big Sur, grew about 2.5 square miles yesterday out into the Ventana Wilderness, around Sykes Hot Springs. There is limited firefighting occurring in the wilderness, and the fire will continue to spread east wherever it wants. This afternoon the fire grew about a half mile to the east, and it is now entering an area which did not burn in the 2016 Soberanes Fire. Up until now, everything the Timber Fire has burned north/east of the Coast Ridge Road has been within the footprint (and reduced fuel loading) of the Soberanes Fire. As the Timber Fire pushes into the previously unburned areas, we expect fire behavior to become more active/severe.
