In this video I show you how to safely tighten a chainsaw clutch without needing the official clutch removal tool. Instead of using expensive kit, I demonstrate how you can re-seat and tighten the centrifugal clutch by carefully knocking it with a soft hammer in the opposite direction to the “OFF” arrow stamped on the clutch.
This method works because chainsaw clutches are reverse-threaded (left-hand thread), so when you hit it sensibly in the correct direction, the clutch snugs back down onto the crankshaft. Once the saw runs, the engine’s rotation will self-tighten it the rest of the way.
⚠️ Important safety tips:
Always remove the spark plug and lock the piston safely (for example, with a piece of soft starter rope in the cylinder).
Never use a hard hammer or chisel, as this can damage the clutch or crankshaft.
Double-check that the clutch is snug and free to operate before running the saw.
