The Three Gorges Dam is located on the upper course of the river Yangtze, in the Xilling Gorge, about 40 km upstream of the city of Yichang. It is one of the most spectacular sceneries in China. The stretch of the Three Gorges is about 200 km long: it starts in the city of Fengjie and ends in the vicinity of Yichang. There the river cuts impressive limestone and granite formations that have given rise to the three famous gorges that give it its name: Qutang, Wuxia and Xiling.
The combination of such important water flows makes the exploitable hydroelectric potential of the Yangtze River one of the largest in the world. But it poses a great danger to coastal populations because of its devastating overflows. One of the most punished and dangerous areas in front of the floods is the beginning of its middle course, from Yichang to Wuhan.
Moreover, the Three Gorges Dam divides the Yangtze basin into two almost equal parts, isolating them from each other. As a consequence, a process of biodiversity loss and extinction of species, some of them absolutely unique, has been unleashed.
