This tutorial demonstrates the three-colour, long-tail cast on, which I use in both my triple-knitted hat patterns:

It casts on three separate layers of stitches, in three different colours, and looks just like the two-colour long-tail cast on: the difference here is that it completely hides the third (middle) layer of stitches between the other two. It is a decorative cast on, and nice and story and stable, so it is a good one for beginners to the triple-knitting technique.
This version of the cast on will create sets of stitches as Knit, Knit, Purl, and as such, is best for triple-knitting in the round.
If you want to use it for patterns worked flat, you are advised that the first row of actual triple-knitting should be a return (or even-numbered) row, where the sets are being worked as Knit, Purl, Purl.
