Threads just quietly became bigger than X.

According to new data reported by TechCrunch, Meta’s Threads now has more daily active users than X, and it happened way faster than almost anyone expected.

The app launched just 18 months ago, and it already surpassed what used to be Twitter. And the reason isn’t some viral moment or a killer feature.

It’s distribution.

Every time you open Instagram or Facebook, Threads is right there. You’re not being asked to download something new, you’re just nudged to tap once. Meta turned its existing ecosystem into a launchpad.

While X struggled through controversy after controversy, Threads just kept shipping. Search, trending topics, web access, hashtags, feature by feature, month after month, quietly closing the gap.

But the real story isn’t Threads versus X.

It’s infrastructure versus independence.

Meta doesn’t need Threads to win on its own. It just needs it to be the default option inside apps billions of people already use every day.

And that’s exactly what’s happening.
