In Part 3 of Markforged’s thread testing series, we review beam bending theory and compare the strength of captive nuts and embedded nuts. We also show how you can reinforce your parts in Eiger, in order to optimize the weak points around the nuts.

Each thread type is evaluated using a set of key metrics:
- Profile: How small a thread can be put in a part?
- Pull strength: How strong the connection is with the thread if you try to pull a bolt from the threads embedded within.
- Torque strength: If you have a thread and you’re screwing a bolt into it, will it fail if the bolt is tightened down too hard, or if you’re embedding a nut into a cavity, how much torque can the cavity handle it handle before the nut slips?
- Installation - Design and work needed for placement.
- Wear and Lifetime - Durability over time.
