This Game Had the WORST Timing Ever…
No game had worse timing than Thrasher: Skate and Destroy.
Released in 1999 by Rockstar, Thrasher took a completely different approach to skateboarding games — focusing on realism, weight, and flow instead of arcade-style combos. And at the time, reviewers actually praised it for that. It felt closer to real skating. More technical. More grounded.
But then Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater dropped… and everything changed.
Tony Hawk was faster, flashier, and way more accessible, instantly taking over the genre. And just like that, Thrasher was completely overshadowed.
What makes it even more interesting is that years later, Skate would come along and prove that Thrasher’s vision actually worked.
So Thrasher didn’t fail because it was bad… it failed because it came out at the exact wrong time.
