Thor's Thunder Tube is an audio or acoustic toy, that makes a sound a bit like thunder. Tim has a variety of these, all in different sizes.
At the end of the tube is a drumskin, with a long spring attached. When you shake the tube, the vibrations in the spring are amplified by the tube and the drumskin, and you get impressive sound effects.
It reminds me slightly of an idea I read about in a science book many years ago. You need a metal poker and a piece of string maybe 2 or 3 feet long. You need to attach the poker to the middle of the string. Then push the ends of the string against your ears, so that the poker is suspended freely on the string. Then get someone to hit the poker - gently! - with a metal object. They will just hear a tinny little sound, but you will hear something much more like a church bell. I tried it and it worked really well.
