The classical fable of the WIDOW OF EPHESUS first appeared in ancient Roman literature. It tells the story of a faithful wife who undermines her reputation by offering the body of her recently deceased husband for crucifixion to save the life of a centurion with whom she has fallen in love. If this sounds like a morally oppressive tale, well, it is. Imagine though, turning the whole story on its head and squeezing out all of the comedic potential. Playwright Christopher Fry did just that in the 1940s with his subversive play A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT.
Edmonton’s Northern Light Theatre presents Christopher Fry’s witty look at love in a time of crisis. Dynamene has vowed to starve herself in the tomb of her husband Virilius. Struck by the power of the moment, or because she has little else to do, Doto the trusty servant follows her charge into the cave. Just as a recipe for disaster is being prepared, a proverbial piece of cake comes along.
A tour de force, A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT establishes Northern Light Theatre’s Artistic Director Trevor Schmidt’s ambition to tell stories of women this season.
