Thomas Buckner is one of the most renowned and versatile singers working within experimental music today. Perhaps best known for his roles in the operas and music dramas of Robert Ashley – a selection of which he will perform in concert later on the same day – he has also premiered music by LeRoy Jenkins, Annea Lockwood, Roscoe Mitchell, Phill Niblock, Christian Wolff, and many others. In this session Thomas will be in conversation with Philip Thomas about his life in music, and specifically about approaches to the repertoire he performs, focussing upon the operas of Robert Ashley and the performance practices that have developed from these.
