In this video we’ll fix one of the most common short game mistakes amateur golfers struggle with: inconsistent 20–30 yard pitch shots caused by a “chicken wing,” too much wrist action, and not enough body rotation. Filmed at Plainfield Country Club with Director of Instruction Ryan Hager, we break down a simple but powerful pitching drill known as the “Death Drill,” originally shared by short game expert James Rid. Using nothing more than a wedge and a flexible alignment stick (or even a modified champagne bottle sleeve), this drill helps eliminate excessive wrist and elbow movement while promoting proper chest rotation and pivot control. If you’ve been chunking wedges, blading chips over the green, or losing strokes from inside 40 yards, this lesson shows you how to create a more connected, “dead-handed” motion similar to players like Steve Stricker and Jason Day. By learning how to rotate your upper body through impact and keep your arms working as a unit, you’ll improve contact, control low point, and develop more consistent wedge play. If you want to sharpen your short game and save strokes around the green, this is a drill you can start practicing immediately.
