Some fun facts - This was the first Mario game not directed by Miyamoto, it was developed by Nintendo's R&D1 team so it ended up feeling delightfully weird and experimental compared to other Mario games.
The Koopas are BOMBSHELL KOOPAS, supposedly the devs ran out of time to program shell kicking physics so they just had the shells explode instead.

Super Mario Land is a 1989 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy, as one of four launch titles for the console. It was first released in Japan in April 1989, followed by North America in August of that year, and Europe and Australia in 1990.
