History Abridged with Jack Rackam | This US Representative Escaped Slavery #Shorts @JackRackam | Uploaded March 2022 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
Here’s a man who’s been getting more spotlight on Reddit and Twitter: Robert Smalls, born enslaved in South Carolina. He’s put in charge of steering a small Confederate ship and one night the three white officers in charge decide to hit up the town and leave Robert in charge of everything because, y’know, they were ‘good’ slaveowners so he would never want to leave. Smalls took off with the whole crew and all their families, gave a casual nod as he passed by Fort Sumter of all places, handed the ship over to the yankees, served in the Union army for the rest of the war, started a business, opened a school, served three terms in the House of Representatives.
