Everywhere else, water gave way to pavement. Giethoorn it didn't. The canals came first, the farmhouses grew up around them, and nobody ever saw a reason to change it.
Now it's the thing people fly in for: 176 wooden bridges, a flat-bottomed boat instead of a car, houses that were standing before the country had its current borders. From a distance it reads like a film set. Too quiet, too clean, too on the nose. Except someone actually lives behind every one of those doors. Kids get rowed to school. Groceries arrive by boat. A funeral moves through the canals instead of down a street, and nobody there treats it as a scene. It's just how the village works.
Most places measure progress by how fast you can get through them. Giethoorn measures it by how long you're willing to sit in a boat and let the countryside pass at its own pace. Hard to argue we got the better deal.
