For decades, scientists questioned whether an animal this large could fly at all.
With a wingspan reaching 12 meters (40 feet), Quetzalcoatlus was comparable in size to small aircraft like the Northrop YB-49.
Its body was covered with hair-like pycnofibers, suggesting it was warm-blooded and highly active.
And despite its gigantic size, its skeleton remained incredibly light - hollow bones filled with air reduced weight without sacrificing strength.
Standing nearly 5 meters tall (16 feet), it was as tall as a giraffe.
Its neck alone reached almost 2 meters (6 feet), while the skull measured over 1 meter (4 feet) in length.
Modern birds struggle to fly at even a fraction of this size.
Yet Quetzalcoatlus still launched itself into the air - possibly using all four limbs to push off the ground.
Even today, scientists still debate exactly how this giant achieved flight.
