Your opponent’s side of the board is usually well protected, but weak squares can become the entry points your pieces need to break in. The process is simple: identify the weak squares, eliminate the defenders, and then invade. Everyone understands light-squared and dark-squared bishops. But many players miss that a knight, in any given position, also attacks squares of only one color. So depending on where it stands, your knight can temporarily become a “light-squared” or “dark-squared” piece.

The queen combines the powers of a bishop and a rook. So when she stands on a light square, for example, she often has extra influence over light squares through her diagonals. This can help you build domination over one color complex and turn weak squares into real attacking targets.
