Illegal logging has been threatening Romania’s important old-growth forests — so in April 2021 authorities introduced a sophisticated electronic timber tracking system to monitor shipments.
The system requires truck drivers to upload photos of all the wood they transport, to ensure no trees are logged without oversight.
But OCCRP and RiseRomania reporters found that some drivers have been submitting seemingly falsified or even unrelated photos — including images of tires, chairs, and apparent drinking parties.
