My family buys me absurd Christmas gifts I can use in the classroom—and this might be my favorite one yet.
This crossing guard-style sign has STOP on one side and SLOW on the other, and I already have about a hundred ways I want to use it:
Hallway transitions
Interrupting arguments
Quieting side conversations
Nonverbal classroom management
Even swapping the signs with custom messages
Here’s the real reason this works: novelty.
Students are used to the sound of our voices. They tune it out. But when you handle a situation in a way they’ve never seen before, you get instant attention—without raising your voice.
It brings more joy to my classroom, makes students smile, and honestly makes my day better too.
