The 42" King of Fans top mount Spinner style ceiling fan is able to be flush-mounted. This puts the blades about 3 1/2" down from the ceiling, which is nowhere near enough clearance for proper air flow. Curiosity eventually got the better of me, so I installed it in this configuration even though I know it's not going to work well.
It turned out to work even worse than I expected! It does not move any noticeable amount of air downward on any speed at all. Instead, some air just kicks out to the side. In addition to the worthless amount of air flow, it is now much louder as all the vibration is transferred into the building to resonate around the room.
It does provide some circulation of the air on reverse since it's installed in a small enough space, but it's still a significant reduction in flow.
I've never heard of a flush-mounted top mount spinner. This is an absolutely ridiculous and not useful configuration that shouldn't be an option. It turns a pretty good fan into worthless junk.
