These rings are made using augmented reality. The image is first generated in a 3D modeling software. Then, to make them look like they’re in the real world, the artist Piper XY tracks the position of a real piece of paper on her hand - using her camera and some additional software.

The result is that when you’re looking through your phone’s camera, it looks like those rings are actually on your hand. This is one of the many ways that augmented reality is combining the digital and physical worlds - in art, education, communication, and more.

(And with the Apple Vision Pro coming out soon, we're definitely going to be seeing more AR and VR experiments!)
