In 2003, a female orangutan named Ponny was rescued from a remote village in Kalimantan in an operation involving about 35 armed police officers. The rescue team faced resistance from local residents because the animal was considered their “personal property.” What they found was heartbreaking—Ponny had been abused, shaved, and forced into unnatural conditions.

After her rescue, she began a long journey of rehabilitation, slowly relearning how to behave like a wild orangutan and regain a life she was never meant to lose.
