In this video, I share a no sew version of the classic "Magic Potholder" that crochet's itself into a double sided square just like magic.
Once you make one of these, youโ€™ll want to make more. Theyโ€™re fast, useful, and super giftable.โ€

Yarn and Hook:
100% Cotton Yarn weight 4
(the potholders in the video took 45 grams each)

4 mm hook

๐Ÿงต Pattern

Starting Chain:
Chain 41 (or desired odd number for your size).

๐Ÿ”„ Round 1:
Begin in second chain from hook.
Work single crochet into the back bump of each chain across.
Rotate and continue working into the other side of the chain using back loop only (BLO) single crochets across.

๐Ÿ“ Note: If you're starting with a chain of 41, you'll have 40 stitches on each long side, for a total of 80 stitches per round. This stays the same throughout.

๐Ÿ”„ Rounds 2 and onward:
Continue working in the round, placing 1 single crochet into the back loop only of each stitch.
DO NOT JOIN ROUNDS.
The fabric will naturally begin to curl inwardโ€”this is what forms the magic fold.
๐Ÿ“Œ Tip: You can use the yarn tail as a marker. When it returns to the opposite side, you've completed a full round.

๐Ÿงฉ Forming the Square:
Continue repeating rounds until the folded piece forms a square.
For a 6" potholder, this took approximately 20 rounds.
At the final round, make a few additional stitches as needed so your seam lands at the halfway point of the edge.

๐Ÿ“Œ Optional Hanger: Before seaming, ch 10 and slip stitch into base of first chain. Add 10 sc's around the ch if you want a thicker hanger.

๐Ÿ” To Resize

Chain = 2x the width of the potholder you want.
Example: For a 6" potholder, chain until it measures 12" stretched (approx. 41 chains).
For 8", chain to 16" (approx. 55 chains).
Use an odd number of chains.

๐Ÿ”— Seam Options

No-Sew Flat Top Slip Stitch Join:
Fold work into a square, aligning the two edges.
Insert hook through inner loops only of both edges.
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops (slip stitch).
Continue this method across to complete the join.
๐Ÿ“Œ Tip: Keep the working yarn underneath for a flat seam.

Simple Whip Stitch Join (Alternative):
Create a strand of yarn 2.5 times the diagonal length .
Thread a yarn needle with your tail.
Seam through the inner loops of both sides using a loose whip stitch.
This also creates a flat join and is easier for beginners.

๐ŸŽจ Planning Color Changes? Do This First!
Crochet a small 2" x 2" single crochet swatch using your yarn and hook .
Count how many rows it took to reach 2".
Divide rows by 2 to get rows per inch.
Multiply that number by your potholder size to estimate total rounds.
โœ‚๏ธ Then divide total rounds by how many color sections you want!

๐Ÿงฎ Example for a 6" x 6" inch potholder:
You make a 2" x 2" swatch and count 7 rows.
โžค 7 รท 2 = 3.5 rows per inch
โžค 3.5 ร— 6" = 21 rounds total for a 6" potholder
โžค Want 3 stripes? โ†’ 21 รท 3 = 7 rounds per color

Note: You can do this with cm's as well.

For stripe placement, here's a great video I came across.
