Over many centuries, European colonialists established plantations around the world. To provide labour to these profitable industries, they forcibly brought enslaved people to work for them, often in conditions of unimaginable cruelty. Photography was one tool used by colonial powers to sell this regime of exploitation to the world. Our curator Cindy Sissokho tells us more.
