I’m transforming this old Ford Transit Custom into the ultimate off-grid camper and after three months of solid progress, it’s finally starting to look how I imagined it.
So far, the van’s been stripped back to bare metal, fully insulated, fitted with windows, a proper electrical system, diesel heater, Apple CarPlay, upgraded security… and now we’re taking things even further on the exterior.
In this episode, I head to Somerset to visit Vantrax youtube.com/@Vantrax_builtforadventure , specialists in adventure van conversions, to begin one of the biggest upgrades yet a custom roof rack system with integrated solar and lighting. Along the way, we mock up the rack, drill the roof , talk future upgrades, and I leave the van with the team while I head off on a Texas trip.
This upgrade unlocks the next stage of the build full solar power, exterior lighting, and true off-grid capability.
