High up in the Swiss mountains, fed by glacial ice and eternal snow, lies the source of Europe's busiest river: the Rine. Hundreds of meltwater streams unite and gush into the valley. Today, they're not many places left where it is permitted to flow freely. Just beyond Reichenau, the power plant at Donat Ems proved an unscalable barrier for fish from Lake Constance on the way to their habitual spawning grounds. By the end of the 70s, the Lake Constance trout was on the brink of extinction. It is partly thanks to Florian Bebi that the species survived.

Florian Bebi - the Canton and the environmentalist battled hard for a fish ladder, costing well over 6 million US Dollars. It was the only way to ensure the long term survival of the lake’s trout.
