Franz Müller was the German murderer responsible for the 1864 “Railway Murder”, one of the most famous Victorian criminal cases in Britain. Müller killed banker Thomas Briggs on a North London Railway train to steal his gold watch and valuables. Briggs was attacked in a first-class carriage and later died from his injuries, shocking Victorian society and sparking widespread media coverage. Detectives traced the stolen watch to Müller, who had fled to the United States. He was arrested, extradited back to Britain, tried at the Old Bailey, and convicted of murder. Müller was publicly executed at Newgate Prison in November 1864, becoming one of the last criminals hanged outside the prison.
