God of War Ragnarök Director Eric Williams explains why the goddess Freya forgives Kratos for taking Baldur's life.

God of War 2018 ends with a very shocking scene. Baldur, consumed with anger at his mother Freya for the spell she cast on him, tries to take her life. She does not stop him, but Kratos does. He cannot stand by and let his friend Freya die. Freya, inconsolable in her grief at losing her son, promises to take vengeance on Kratos.

In God of War Ragnarök, Freya stops short of killing Kratos because she can't rob Atreus of his father. However, she enlists Kratos' help in taking vengeance against the person ultimately responsible for much of the grief and loss in the nine realms, the Aesir god Odin.

Kratos succeeds in helping Freya break free from one of Odin's curses. Kratos apologizes to Freya and tells her that he should not have robbed her of the choice over life and death with respect to her son Baldur. Freya reconciles with Kratos, and her forgiveness has a physical effect on him as his shoulders ease after being forgiven. Actor Christopher Judge made the most of this subtle but powerful scene.

The two continue onward through Vanaheim, restoring peace to the realm. Freya, a Vanir goddess and Queen of the Valkyries, has found some measure of peace by defeating Odin and joining Kratos in his quest to rebuild the nine realms.
