Filmmaker Mikki Willis shared the story of losing his brother David, who had lived with AIDS in stable health for nearly a decade until being prescribed AZT under Anthony Fauci's guidance. He described his brother's rapid decline, losing muscle mass, vomiting daily, unable to get out of bed, while doctors dismissed his mother's concerns as his body simply "acclimating" to the medicine. Even as members of his brother's own community called to warn her the drug itself was the danger, she held on because Fauci was presented as America's top doctor, surrounded by celebrity friends who seemed to vouch for him by association. His brother died of pneumonia not long after. Sometimes the most dangerous trust is built on reputation rather than evidence.
