The film follows Eleanor Gates, a lonely widow struggling to find meaning after the loss of her husband and the death of her son in the Korean War. Her friend Edna Davis attempts to recruit her into a "peace group," which initially appeals to Eleanor’s desire to help humanity. However, her daughter Sally and son-in-law Mike become increasingly concerned as they discover the group is a front for communist ideology. After it is revealed that the organizers are under indictment, the family, with the help of their pastor, stages an intervention. The pastor successfully redirects Eleanor’s search for purpose by convincing her that the true solution to world peace and personal fulfillment lies in a rededication to Christian faith and the church, rather than secular political movements.
