During the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este I have filmed this 1959 Ferrari 196 S.
Enzo Ferrari’s wife gave birth to their only child in 1932. Alfredo Ferrari was known affectionately by his nickname Dino. As a passionate young engineer, Dino was instrumental in some of Ferrari’s technical developments. Tragically, their son passed away at the age of just 24 years in 1956. In spite of suffering from muscular dystrophy, he had continued working on several projects at the Ferrari factory. One of the most notable was a small V6 engine developed in collaboration with the great Vittorio Jano. When the engine was put into production, Enzo Ferrari named it ‘Dino’ in memory of his son. The cam covers bore the Dino script based on his son’s signature to preserve his legacy in Ferrari’s history. The Ferrari 196 S Dino was developed for competition in the 2 litre class of the World Sports Car Championship.
The sports racing car was powered by a 2.0 litre V6 engine with dual overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank, producing 195 horsepower. The car featured a tubular steel chassis, independent front suspension and a live rear axle, although stopping power was still provided by drum brakes. The model showcased here was built in 1959 and bodied by Medardo Fantuzzi, featuring a design harking back to the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. This particular car never raced during the 1959 season. Instead, it was delivered to Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s importer in New York, and purchased by Don Pedro Rodríguez of Mexico City for his sons, Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez. Later, they both went on to become Ferrari factory drivers. In December 1959, Ricardo Rodríguez drove the 196 S Dino under the NART (North American Racing Team) banner at the Bahamas Speed Week. He took second and fourth place in two of the races and won the class. In May of the following year, Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez pushed the car to a seventh-place finish at the Targo Florio in Sicily. This achievement was despite the car rolling over twice before landing back on its wheels and continuing to the chequered flag! The 196 S Dino (Chassis 0776) put in its last major international appearance at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 1961, securing a first-in-class finish. Apart from a brief hiatus in the early 1970s, the car has remained in active service all along as a competitor, passing through the hands of several renowned Ferrari collectors. The Dino continues to be well preserved and has been in the care of its current custodian since 2023.
