It’s getting exciting! We visited the “Rhine Rebels Basel” and had the chance to get to know Roller Derby up close.
I (Daniel) took some solid hits, faced my first tripod, tried the apex jump, and much more!
Roller Derby is a full-contact sport played on roller skates, also known as quads or quad skates.
Before we dive into the Roller Derby rules, we would like to say a huge thank you to the Rhine Rebels Basel, the Roller Derby club from Basel.

Below is a short overview of the Roller Derby rules:
In Roller Derby, two teams compete against each other, and the winners are the ones who score the most points overall.
A game or match lasts one hour and is divided into two halves of 30 minutes each.
Each half consists of short rounds that last a maximum of 2 minutes or less.
These rounds or game units are called jams.
In every jam, the jammer tries to score as many points as possible.
This takes place on a track that must not be left during the jam.
Points are scored when the jammer passes the opposing blockers.
There are no points for the first pass, but the jammer who first gets past the opposing blockers earns the so-called “Lead Jam.”
After that, points are awarded for each opposing blocker passed.
The jammer with Lead Jam can end the maximum two-minute round at any time and use this decision strategically for their team.
