Speaker Roberta Metsola had to intervene during a European parliament session in Strasbourg after some members in the room broke into the anti-fascist song Bella Ciao after an address by the Hungarian prime minister.

Earlier, Viktor Orbán had set out the priorities for Hungary’s six-month EU presidency, in an address in which he offered a fairly conventional script calling for less regulation and efforts to bolster the EU’s single market. This usually routine moment in the EU calendar became a boisterous session, with singing and personal insults
