In today’s video, I want to show you why I think Sonible’s Smart:Comp 3 is doing something genuinely revolutionary. They’ve introduced a "Map" feature that changes the fundamental way we interact with compression.
Usually, when we use a compressor, we are forced to work indirectly—tweaking attack, release, and ratio settings to hopefully arrive at a sound we have in our head. But what if you could just tell the plugin exactly where you want to end up?
I break down how this "target-based" approach makes it incredibly easy to match the vibe of different drum loops, which is a lifesaver when you are trying to get consistency across different tracks on an album or EP. I also compare this workflow to the APU Loudness Compressor and show you a custom multiband setup I built in Bitwig to achieve similar results.
This is exactly how I think compressors should operate in the future. No more guessing—just matching.
