I got my hands on a working Google Sooner, the first Android phone prototype, the one Google planned to ship before the iPhone changed everything. In this video I power it on and walk through exactly what Android looked like before the world ever heard of it.
The Sooner was built by HTC on the same chassis as the T-Mobile Dash: a 2.43-inch non-touch screen, full QWERTY keyboard, 200MHz TI OMAP850 processor, and 64MB of RAM, running a pre-1.0 version of Android with Gmail, Google Talk, Maps, and the first unified notification system in mobile. Then Steve Jobs walked on stage at Macworld. Andy Rubin watched the keynote from a taxi at CES and knew instantly that Google's BlackBerry competitor was dead. Google scrapped the Sooner as a commercial product, pivoted Android to touch, and shipped the HTC Dream (the T-Mobile G1) instead. But the Sooner stayed relevant inside Google as the stable hardware Android was built on.
