Also called a binturong, they’re native to the forests of Southeast Asia, and are the largest members of the civet family, weighing up to 80 pounds. Its long prehensile tail works almost like a fifth limb as it moves through the trees.
But more importantly, its pee smells like buttered popcorn.
Binturong urine contains 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, or 2-AP (C₆H₉NO), the same aroma compound responsible for that unmistakable smell that fills movie theaters and used to greet us every time we walked into a Blockbuster. Both males and females use urine and scent marking to leave chemical messages for other binturongs.
Binturongs also eat a ton of fruit, especially figs, which makes them important seed dispersers in Southeast Asian forests. They carry seeds through the canopy and deposit them in their droppings, sometimes in exactly the kinds of places where new plants can take root. Passing through a binturong’s digestive system can even help some fig seeds germinate.
So, binturongs spend their nights climbing around the rainforest smelling like a movie theater and pooping out the next generation of forest.
It’s one of the coolest animals I’ve gotten to kiss!
