What started as a tipsy prank in 1933 became one of the most famous hotel traditions in the world.

Every morning at 11, five mallards leave their rooftop Duck Palace, walk a red carpet into the lobby of the Peabody Memphis, and take over the fountain until 5 pm.

The tradition began when three ducks were released into the hotel fountain after a hunting trip. Guests loved them, and the Duck March was born.

Even better? Each duck serves for just three months before returning to the wild.
