Here's a neat way to have your handheld torch light up the area.
It's basically one command, and a cleanup one first.
It's that simple.
execute as @p at @s run fill ~-1 ~ ~-1 ~1 ~3 ~1 air replace light
execute as @p at @s if entity @s[nbt={Inventory:[{Slot:-106b,id:"minecraft:torch"}]}] run fill ~ ~1 ~ ~ ~1 ~ light[level=14] replace air
