These thrusters burned for about 20 seconds. Once ignited, solid-propellent motors cannot be shut off. When the vernier thrusters were no longer needed, an explosive charge blew off the nozzles which stopped the thrust. After the verniers thrusters were cut off the reentry vehicle containing the nuclear warhead detached from the second stage.
