Preserved Bronze Age Brains

In 2023, extraordinary finds emerged in Turkey; ancient brains and skin were remarkably preserved. Adding this astounding revelation, archaeologists unearthed another set of well-preserved brains at the same site later that year. These remains were discovered at Tanla Mound in the Kataya Province, located in the heart of Western Anatolia. These Bronze Age discoveries marked a significant milestone for Turkey, being the first of their kind found in the nation. Preserved brains are exceedingly rare, with only a few instances documented throughout history. The preservation of brain tissue requires specific conditions, typically involving carbonization. This process occurs when individuals are exposed to high temperatures upon death, converting organic matter into carbon and thereby preventing decomposition.

Further analysis of the brain and skin remnants revealed intriguing details about their owners. One set belonged to a young man estimated to be between 15 and 18 years old, while the other set belonged to a middle-aged man estimated to be between 40 and 45 years old at the time of his demise. What makes this archaeological discovery truly astonishing is the story it unveils. These preserved remains suggest that these individuals were likely fleeing their homes around 1700 BCE, seeking refuge from a devastating event. It is speculated that their homes were set ablaze during a city raid, prompting their desperate flight. The identity of the assailants responsible for the fire and raid remains a mystery, leaving archaeologists intrigued and eager for further investigation. This remarkable find not only sheds light on ancient human migrations and survival strategies but also underscores the ongoing mysteries of the Bronze Age civilizations in Anatolia.
