On this day, Civil War hero Robert Gould Shaw was born. Raised in an abolitionist family, Shaw believed deeply in the equal natural rights of all people. During the Civil War, he accepted the challenge of leading the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first Black regiment organized in the North. At just 24 years old, Shaw led his men with courage and conviction. He was killed in the assault on Fort Wagner, but his leadership and sacrifice helped prove the valor and capability of Black soldiers fighting for freedom.
