On this day, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, after refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus. Parks, a committed civil rights activist, chose to stay seated when the driver demanded she move for white passengers.
Her arrest inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and local leaders to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, during which Black residents walked, carpooled, and found new ways to commute in protest of segregation. The following year, the Supreme Court struck down segregation on public buses as unconstitutional. Parks’ courage helped ignite a broader fight for equality and justice.
