They told us WW2 ended in victory, in justice, in freedom. But for millions across the colonized world, the end of the war only meant more bloodshed. While Europeans waved flags, France was bombing Algerian villages. The same people forced to fight fascism were denied their own liberation — killed for asking to be free.
Hamza Hamouchene, North Africa Programme Coordinator at the Transnational Institute, traces a different history — one that connects Algeria, Vietnam, and Palestine. As we mark 70 years since the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ and remember Algeria’s revolution, we’re reminded that decolonization came through resistance. That same resistance lives on — in Gaza, and across the Global South.
