Meet the robotic arm that changed space history — Canadarm! This groundbreaking Canadian innovation launched in 1981 and became essential to the Space Shuttle program.
It deployed and captured the Hubble Space Telescope for repair as well as numerous satellites, supported astronauts during spacewalks and even inspected shuttles to ensure safe re-entry, all while using less power than a kettle. Canadarm was the first in a series of Canadian robotics in space, followed by Canadarm2 and Dextre on the International Space Station, with Canadarm3 in development!
After 30 years and 90 missions, Canadarm was retired in 2011. Visit Canadarm at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.
