When news of a tiny German tribe's uprising reached Publius Quinctilius Varus, the first governor of the new Roman province of Germania, he was on his way from his summer residence near Minden to the Roman legionary fortification of Moguntiacum (modern-day Mainz). Varus was accustomed to revolts; during his tenure as governor of Syria, he had been tasked with imposing a strict tax system on the locals. As was almost always the case when a conquered nation first felt the burden of Rome's economic needs, Judea rose in insurrection. Varus quickly marched with two of his four legions to relieve a legion stranded in Jerusalem, following the Roman script for putting an end to uprisings. The people of Sepphoris were stormed and sold into slavery as he approached. Varus crucified 2,000 alleged insurgents despite the fact that the rebels were forced to surrender without a struggle by the legions' obvious might and instances like Sepphoris.
