Would you rather 3 separate ancient temples or a 3-in-1 combo? 🏛️
The archaeological site of Sbeitla is a special one. It has layers spanning the Roman Empire, the Early Christian Era, the Byzantines, and finally Islamic habitation. When you visit, it feels like walking through a Roman city frozen in time as it has one of the best preserved Roman forums in the world!
Sbeitla was called Sufetula in antiquity, and stands out as a unique Roman city thanks to its three separate temples to the ancient gods Jupiter (Zeus), Juno (Hera) , and Minerva (Athena). Normally they shared one temple, but the citizens of Sufetula built one for each of them 🏛️
Sufetula was inhabited right up past the Islamic period, meaning it thrived as a major trading centre for hundreds of years!
