Engine-Free Planes Are Changing Cargo Forever - Aerolane Cargo Glider
Imagine delivering tons of cargo by air—with no engines, no fuel, and almost no noise. Sounds like science fiction? Meet Aerolane, a startup reinventing air cargo with autonomous, unpowered gliders that fly by surfing behind regular airplanes.
Founded in 2022, Aerolane is building gliders that can carry several tons of freight—without burning a single drop of fuel. These gliders are towed behind traditional aircraft and use a method called vortex surfing—riding in the aerodynamic wake, just like birds drafting in formation.
Their goal? Deliver air cargo at the speed of flight but with the cost—and emissions—of ground transport.
The company has already built and flown two advanced prototypes:
One based on a Pipistrel Virus,
Another on a Velocity SE canard aircraft.
Both are being tested with autonomous flight systems and still have engines for safety, but Aerolane plans to remove them entirely in future versions. The gliders are towed by piloted aircraft for now, but the vision is full automation—glider and tow plane flying together as robotic freight trains in the sky.
Aerolane is working with the FAA on a new category of unpowered cargo airframes, made from ultralight composite materials. Their product timeline includes:
A 3-ton glider in the near term,
Followed by a 10-ton variant—capable of flying thousands of kilometers without engines or fuel.
In 2025, they aim to launch their first operational fleet, based at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas.
Unpowered cargo flight isn’t a new idea. During World War 2, the U.S. designed the XCG-16A glider to stealthily transport troops across the Atlantic. It was never completed, but it showed that silent, radar-free delivery was possible—and powerful.
Aerolane revives that idea for a new mission: sustainability and efficiency, not stealth.
Backed by $11.5 million in seed funding, including support from X (Google’s moonshot division), Aerolane’s concept is gaining attention from logistics companies, humanitarian groups, and even the military.
