“All I Need” is a romantic pop-rock ballad by American actor and singer Jack Wagner, released in October 1984 as the lead single from his debut album of the same name. Wagner, who was already widely recognized for his role as Frisco Jones on the soap opera General Hospital, ventured into music with this track that was written by Glen Ballard, Clif Magness, and David Pack, and produced by Ballard and Magness. The song captures a classic ’80s love-song sentiment, with lyrics expressing the singer’s growing certainty that the person he’s falling for is all he ever needs, despite initial hesitation about love.
“All I Need” became Wagner’s biggest hit and his only Top 40 single, soaring to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1985 and spending two weeks there behind Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” while also topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks. The song was especially notable in the mid-1980s for achieving this success without the backing of a major music video, a rarity at the time, and it helped the All I Need album gain broader attention. In later years the track has been remembered as an emblematic ’80s ballad and has even been recognized on programs ranking notable songs from the decade.
